Connecticut investigating beach club's fence

GROTON, Conn. (AP) - The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is investigating whether a beach club's fence hinders public access to the coastline.

The Day reports that the agency is looking into the Shenecossett Beach Club's fence, which is located next to the University of Connecticut-Avery Point campus.

A Manchester resident contacted the agency after he noticed a fence extending along the Groton club's stone jetty with a sign that said "Shenecossett Beach Co. Inc. Members Only."

Karen Parks, the beach club's vice president, says the sign was installed and the fence extended after two people were hurt climbing on the slippery rocks.

Brian Golembiewski, a state environmental analyst, says if a violation is found, the agency could order the fence be removed or the sign moved.
